Food Art Projects For Kids That Teach Basic Culinary Design

Fun food art projects for kids is an ideal way to teach them basic culinary design. Introduce them to food art by allowing them to “get creative” with lunch or dinner menus. Food art projects also help kids learn to like their veggies. Where possible, help kids learn respect for vegetables by allowing them to grow produce they’ll need for fun food art projects. It teaches them how to determine food quality and how produce is grown.

Fun Food Art Projects For Kids

When is a sandwich not just a sandwich? When kids have the opportunity to create bread shapes from round and square loaves of bread they can stuff with their favorite luncheon meats or tuna and vegetables. They can paint whimsical designs using mayonnaise or mustard. Or for peanut butter and jelly lovers, slice round bread in two halves, fill with peanut butter on one half and jelly on the other. Then, make faces from mini-marshmallows and chocolate chips for eyes and cherry licorice for a mouth on the top of the loaf. Add banana slices for ears. Use toasted coconut for hair.

Soup By Any Other Design

One way to get kids to like pea or tomato soup is to allow them to create designs in the soup just like the professional chefs do. Let kids select a favorite design from their coloring books. Allow them to swirl sour cream from a squeeze tube to design the pattern. Cut the end of one corner of a small plastic sandwich bag to use as a squeeze tube.

Veggies Fancy Free

Kids will eat their vegetables if they look more appetizing. The same is true of some of their less favorite fruits. Using a dinner plate and thinly sliced celery sticks for an outline, allow kids to create a bed of lettuce in the center upon which a “picture” can be fashioned from flower radishes, mushroom “toadstools”, broccoli “trees” and a sun made from a round carrot slice with julienne carrots for sun rays. Make clouds from ranch dressing.
